Medical Service
Mission
The fields of competence of the Medical Service are the following:
- Field medicine (care, advice and medical inspection).
- Information management.
- Resource management.
- Medico-administrative management.
- Medical expertise.
The Medical Service is competent in all police fields. However its power to reimburse medical expenses resulting from occupational accidents or diseases only applies to members of the Federal Police. The occupational medicine is linked with the Directorate of Internal Prevention and Protection at Work.
Scope of activities and composition
Field medicine (care, advice and medical inspection)

Curative medicine: 12 health centres, general practice and sports medicine clinics, more than 3,000 registered doctors working in their own offices.

Chief (advice) and deputy (inspection) medical officers of the Provincial Medical Centres: ensure the smooth functioning of these centres and manage the nurses working there, are in charge of the contacts with and the advice to employers and of the decisions in this field, carry out medical inspections in the Provincial Medical Centres and at home (registered medical examiners).

General (emergency medicine) or specialised (emergency medicine in critical situations) operational medical support to cover staff members working directly in the field.

Dentistry.

Preventive and curative veterinary medicine (animal inspection, food and care counselling, etc.), operational veterinary support, food control.

Medical information management
- Computer cell.
- Data maintenance: computer integration, codification, quality control, management of the paper archives and microfilms.
- Data processing: establishment of the sick leave quota, statistical analyses for diagnosing purposes intended for employers, medical examiners (centralised medical inspection) or preventive medicine.
- Website management.
- First aid teaching management cell for the integrated police staff and for the purposes of specialised medical education and courses for the staff of the police’s Medical Service.
Resource management
- Staff management.
- Preparation of conventions and keeping up-to-date of the registered doctors’ files and lists.
- Mail management and executive secretariat.
- Logistics management: infrastructure, vehicles, medical or non-medical material, investment plans and purchases, goods receipts, distribution and management of non-pharmaceutical products.
- Finance :
- Budgets (budget-making progress, monitoring, reporting, Visa change request, etc.)
- Quality control of payment authorisations.
- Integration of bills and requests for reimbursement into “Oracle” for payment purposes.
Medico-administrative management
- Reimbursement procedures and authorisations resulting from the free care system for the integrated police members or from occupational accidents and diseases for the Federal Police members.
- Recovery of the costs incurred in terms of health care whenever there is a responsible third party source of payment (common law and judicial expertise).
- Pharmaceutical products:
- Lists of the products that are refundable or that can be used.
- Inventory of medical centres, emergency bags and vehicles, dentist’s surgeries and veterinary surgeons.
- Specifications in this field.
- Contacts and agreements with companies.
- Inventory management.
- Making sure the rules are applied in the field of delivery.

Medical expertise
- Physical rehabilitation and endurance tests.
- Expertise in bodily injuries:
- Medical reports for the Directorate of Judicial Police.
- Expert’s assessments in the field of occupational accidents and quota for employers as well as for the Medico-legal Office.
- Amicable expert’s appraisals and expert’s appraisals with regard to common law as representative of the State or, on demand, on behalf of a staff member of the police.
- Expert’s assessments for medical boards.
- Technical and medico-legal support for the ministries in charge and for the Disaster Victim Identification unit.
