1. Law of 7 December 1998 organizing an integrated police service, structured on two levels
The police services are organized and structured on two levels: the federal level and the local level, that provide integrated policing together. (…) In accordance with Title III of the present law, the federal police carry out the specialized and supralocal tasks of administrative and judicial police, as well as supporting tasks for the local police services and for the police authorities, taking into account the principles of speciality and subsidiarity, throughout the territory.
The Dog Support Unit performs these specialized and supporting tasks by deploying its specialized dog teams.
The federal police prepare the national security plan and contribute, with all their general directorates and services, to the implementation of this plan.
Without prejudice to article 4, the national security plan contains, with regard to the federal police:
1° the tasks and priorities of the federal police, as determined by the Minister of Justice and the Minister of the Interior, and the way in which they have to be achieved
2° the distribution of the personnel and material means among the general directorates and services.
The objectives of the Dog Support Unit are accurately described in the national security plan 2004-2007.

4. Ministerial Decree laying down the conditions for the agreement of a police dog
This decree determines the conditions for the agreement of a police dog more precisely, and establishes the criteria relating to its character for the administrative agreement, the continuing training and the compulsory training of such a dog.
