Units
The central units, called “Special Units”, are based in Brussels and are composed of several special services:
- The observation unit
- The intervention unit
- The technical unit
- Other special services, such as the Explosive Detection Dog Unit and the Disaster Victim Identification Team (DVI).
The decentralised units are the four POSA squads (Protection, Observation, Support and Arrest squads).
- POSA Liège
- POSA Charleroi
- POSA Ghent
- POSA Antwerp

Like the Special Units, those squads carry out observation missions, make special arrests and provide technical support.
Special missions such as hostage-taking incidents are part of the Special Units’ missions. The POSA units may also be asked to support them.
Explosive detection dogs
The explosive detection dogs belong to the Special units of the Federal Police. Like any other police dogs, those dogs are trained for one specific mission, i.e. detecting the presence of explosives or munitions.
